Short fiction films by young people
The Rural Media Company received a First Light Studio Award this year for five groups of young people from Herefordshire and Shropshire to make their own short fiction films with guidance from film and TV professionals.
Five filmmakers from the region took responsibility for producing each of the films and mentored the young people through the process, bringing in a writer, drama coach, camera and sound crew at appropriate stages of the production. Each group took part in training sessions in screenwriting, storyboarding, acting and camera skills, before filming in their chosen rural locations.
The stories they tell range from tense thrillers to slapstick comedy and magical fantasies and were developed during the Rural Writes project last year.
SCREWBALL

What do you do when the local bully fancies the same girl as you? Give up or see if you can conjure up a little magic to help?
EXTREME GRANNY SWITCH

A short-sighted granny gets the wrong end of the stick and starts harassing the local skateboarders.
RUN RABBIT RUN

After yet another bitter argument with her father, Jess picks up the old family suitcase and makes a run for it.
BATTERY LIFE

Three friends set off on an adventure through the woods. Soon separated, they have some strange encounters, leaving their fate uncertain.
EYEWITNESS

When Chloe makes a new friend Laura, she gets concerned when her older brother Jake takes an interest as well.
THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS

Down on the farm, debts are mounting and the bank wants to foreclose. Three girls set out to save the farm, by whatever means possible.
This film was made as part of the Rural Writes project.
