The Pitch

At the pitch, the groups from Wem, Ludlow, Ledbury, Kington and Peterchurch showed their video clips and had ten minutes to try to persuade the panel that their idea was the best.

"It was a realistic version of what it really is like to go in and present an idea to a commissioning editor," said panel member Lee-Jane, fresh from screening her latest release in Los Angeles.

The storylines that the groups came up with demonstrated plenty of flair and talent. Their ideas included a slapstick comedyabout robbers who get carried away by the disguises they choose; a tale of mysterious suitcases; an abduction in the woods by secret powers; an avenging granny with a terminal dislike of skateboarders; and an apprentice magician using his magical powers to get rid of his bullying rival and win the heart of the girl he admires.

"It was a great day," commented The Rural Media Company’s Artistic Director, Jane Jackson, "The enthusiasm of the groups was evident and their confidence was outstanding. It is quite something to sit there and be grilled about your idea. This is a very good introduction to building a career in the film and TV industry. All the groups did very well, and it was extremely hard for the judges to make a decision."

The judges finally decided that the group from Wem won the day, but it was a tight run competition. Wem's script about over-enthusiastic bank robbers will now be produced as a short film at The Rural Media Company. The remaining scripts will be entered into The Film Council's First Light scheme, which provides funding to support young film-makers.
