Over 250 young people from Herefordshire and Shropshire were involved in the Role Model project, working together to produce short animations.
A key aspect of the scheme was that the children carried out every aspect of production, from storyboarding to editing. Teachers were impressed by how quickly pupils were able to use the DV cameras and Apple Mac computers to produce creative work that established many curriculum benefits.

The project took place over three days. On the first day, a digital artist worked with pupils developing a story and for the second two, a professional digital animator and a trainee, supported by two teaching staff and a teaching support assistant worked with pupils to produce a short stop-frame animation using clay models.
Two of the schools submitted their films to the Co-op Young Filmmaker’s Festival, with one receiving an award.
“The children are very lucky. This is not an opportunity many children get. We couldn’t have done the animation project without the ‘story maker’ and the animator. We don’t have the training and we don’t have the equipment.”
