SHOP: MEDIA EDUCATION

Giving people powerful and creative ways to communicate and to express themselves is what The Rural Media Company was set up to do back in 1992. Here are just 2 of our favourite community media projects:

Shroves

Regenerating community

A hill farming community came together to cope with the aftermath of the Foot and Mouth outbreak. The disease not only destroyed their animals, it also devastated the social fabric.  The process of making Shroves helped the community to heal and come to terms with what happened to them.

“This is a black comedy and it expresses real fear in rural areas about the future of farming.  I hope that many people will see it, enjoy it and then reflect on its deeply serious message.”

John Oliver, Bishop of Hereford

The Vawn

Practical media education

  • running time 22 mins

A filmmaking and media production training course held in rural North Herefordshire over ten weeks led to this fiction film collaboration between the community and TV professionals from The Rural Media Company.   The story -  ancient ritual and superstition meet teenage disaffection on the borderlands with shocking results – involved people aged 8 – 80, who took roles acting, composing the soundtrack, finding locations, working as assistant film crew members, doing props, costumes, stills and publicity.  As a result, several members of the community have found new directions and are pursuing careers in media related areas.
